Bobb Trimble - Iron Curtain Innocence

Born ten years too late to attract the attention he deserved, Bobb Trimble created an utterly unique body of work that merged psychedelia, folk-rock, space music and sound effects into rock’s most convincing depiction of a disturbed mind.
As with most tortured artistic souls, Bobb’s distinct vision is filled with much more than just fear and self-loathing. It drips with beauty and heartbreak, and his high, fragile voice bleeds with passion. The music evokes the sixties yet sounded contemporary when released in the eighties and again when re-released in the nineties.

Bobb’s two impossibly rare albums change hands for u
ngodly sums of money, and for years his reputation grew among collectors as his music was heard via tape trades (often on unlabeled tapes, which led to one male collector falling in love with the beautiful voice only to be informed that the singer was actually a man).
In the mid-90s, Bobb’s music was finally made widely available when the bulk of the two albums were released on CD as Jupiter Transmission. Die-hard fans of psychedelia rate Bobb’s music as the finest in the genre from the 80s.

Thomas Köner - Nuuk

Thomas Köner, born 1965, attended the music college in Dortmund and studied electronic music at the CEM-Studio in Arnhem. Until 1994 he worked with film sound as sound engineer. He extended his concept of sound colour to moving images, resulting in video installations and film works.

While studying, he dedicated himself to intensive sound research in the recording studio. His first impulse consisted in avoiding rhythm and melody and focusing instead on the phenomenon of sound colour. To intensify the experience of sound, he decided to work with other media, resulting at first in the collaboration with film artist Jürgen Reble and the live performance Alchemie (1992).

Pantha du Prince - Black Noise

Pantha du Prince, also known as Hendrik Weber, is a minimal artist signed to Rough Trade Records. His music is often characterised by a hypnotic, intricate combination of melodic chimes and dark, heavy techno beats, but does not confine itself to a single sound or strain of minimal techno. Arrangements are lush and textural, energising yet melancholy; a plethora of sounds and ideas unified by a consistent underlying tech-house beat. dreaming music.

Faust - Faust IV

Faust is a German krautrock band, originally composed of Werner “Zappi” Diermaier, Hans Joachim Irmler, Arnulf Meifert, Jean-Hervé Péron, Rudolf Sosna and Gunter Wüsthoff, working with producer Uwe Nettelbeck and engineer Kurt Graupner. The group formed in Wümme in 1971 and soon began recording their debut, "Faust”, which sold poorly, but established a devoted fanbase. With a series of early 1970s releases, Faust became one of the most significant bands in the genre that would eventually be known as krautrock.

Faust were arguably the most radical of the groups of their era, using advanced studio techniques and electronics in a way that opened up new possibilities for studio composition. At the time they may not have appeared to have had the same impact as a number of their German peers (notably Kraftwerk, Can and Tangerine Dream), but they are increasingly recognised as the most far-sighted of the German groups of
that era.

Causa Sui - Summer Sessions Vol. 1

Causa Sui (meaning cause of itself in Latin) is four Danes in their early/mid-twenties, who have made and released music together since before they were teenagers in various genres.
Causa Sui is not the hipster’s unintelligent 60ies-look nostagia music, not a scholar’s sad search for the most complex of compositions, nor a neanderthal take on sludgy riffs. This is free music – all written, shaped, played and produced by the band during 9 months of isolation.

Imagine the furious haze of manic Hendrix and Blue Cheer jamming with a young Iggy Pop, recorded and seamlessly layered by krautrockers Can. It’s untamed music picked up from the late 60s, not looking back at zeitgeists and other limitations, picking up different trails on the way, wrapped in a complex, but soundwise warm and simple jacket.

Play loud indeed!

The Microphones - Mount Eerie

The Microphones is the name of a project that Anacortes, WA’s Phil Elverum has headed since the late 90s. Its sound is best described as lo-fi “fuzz folk,” ranging from drum-crashing, bass-thrashing sonic freakouts, strummy classical guitar love songs, angelic vocal choirs, and almost-whispered vocals over harmoniums and bell kits. In 2004, Elverum abandoned the “Microphones” name to begin recording as Mount Eerie.

Venetian Snares - 4 Adaptations Of Rossz Csillag Alatt Szuletett

Probably the current undisputed Breakcore Heavy-Weight Champion Bong-Ra (aka Jason Kohnen) here steps into the ring alongside Venetian Snares (aka Aaron Funk) - with the ensuing 12" nowhere near as hectic as you'd imagine. Having first sampled the delights of the Snares career defining 'Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett' on a wet Easter Sunday, Kohnen decided that some dues needed to be paid and set about reinterpreting four cuts from the original album in his own vision. Rather than batter the whip-lash beats with an iron fist, Bong-Ra has coaxed the jazzier end of the spectrum out into the open, resulting in a relaxed series of double-takes that reference Badalamenti and Squarepusher's 'Iambic 5 Poetry', as well as Venetian Snars own immense "Moonglow" 7". With a particular highlight being the cinematic Bong-Ra mix of 'Szamar Madar, this 12" succeeds in casting both the original material and remixing artist in a new light - something that is increasingly rare in these rejig-for-cash days

East Of The Wall + Year Of No Light + Rosetta - Split

Born from the dissolution of the Postman Syndrome, East of the Wall formed in 2005 in Gunnison Beach, New Jersey, United States as bass guitarist Brett Bamberger (Biclops; ex Day Without Dawn, Postman Syndrome) and drummer Mike Somers (ex Postman Syndrome) joining forces with guitarist Jeff Speidell (Delft). The self-titled EP that followed was noteworthy for its duplicitous nature, straddling the line between an engulfing ambience and crushing force.
Yet one more band started after too many Belgian beers under the sun of the ending summer of 2001, Year of No Light slightly but undoubtly started to slide down to gloomier atmospheres as the inherent chaos of Bordeaux’s caves and harshness of winter made their common work.
Philadelphia quartet Rosetta push the boundaries between metal, progressive, post-rock, space rock and hardcore, providing an experimental songwriting technique filled with chaos and atmospherics. A band whose sounds range from Pink Floydian / progressive rock sonic layering to walls of pure static ambience to crushing, sweeping sludgey riffage.

Even better if you like two or more of these. Hooded Menace - Fulfill The Curse

Hooded Menace is a Doom/Death Metal band formed in Finland (Joensuu) in 2007.

It all started in June of 2007 when three doom/death -loving freaks got together to jam some Candlemass cover songs but using old school death metal style vocals instead. They were having so much fun that they decided to start writing their own material, very much influenced by the first Cathedral album, Winter, and Asphyx. They wanted to do play really doom-laden death metal that combined crushing and somber riffs with just a slight hint of melody that comes from their love for the early Candlemass albums from the 80’s.

The band continued to jam but still didn’t have a band name yet. The guitarist and vocalist Lasse (also known from the cult Finnish death metal band Phlegethon and death/grinders Vacant Coffin) was a big fan of the Blind Dead zombies from the classic 70’s Spanish horror series that included the films “Tombs of the Blind Dead”, “Return of the Evil Dead”, “Horror of the Zombies”, and “Night of the Seagulls”. The rotting, eyeless Templar knights who rode on horses and drank the blood of their victims had a big influence on the music. The name HOODED MENACE was chosen by Billy Nocera of Razorback Records and the band was now officially born!

Mount Eerie - Lost Wisdom

Mount Eerie represents the latest evolution of Phil Elverum’s musical vision. Formerly known as The Microphones, Phil changed his project’s name to Mount Eerie while maintaining his subtle, lo-fi, and lyrically dense fuzz-folk aesthetic.

(Taken from last.fm)

What a beauty this record is. Just above 23 minutes of wonderful dreamy lo-fi folk with both male and female vocals. Based on this record it's hard to imagine how Mount Eerie could ever open for a Wolves in the Throne Room show, but they actually do so in February - mostly of course because one of Elverum's favorite bands is Xasthur and he introduced black metal aesthetics in his music on the 2009 record "Wind's Poem" which I'll share soon.

Crippled Black Phoenix - The Resurrectionists/Night Raider

Crippled Black Phoenix is a post-rock band from the United Kingdom, formed in 2004 by members of Electric Wizard and Mogwai.
The band has described their own songs as "end time ballads. ” They go on to say, “Born from a blizzard of horned cats, Crippled Black Phoenix bring you a twisted cinematic experience, handcrafted by a mercenary crew of underground heavyweights, giving depth and gravity to regal songs about love, loss, tragedies and redemption.” The band got its name from the nickname Justin Greaves took on when he played with Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson in Teeth of the Lions Rule the Divine.

Saxon Shore - It doesn't matter

At the time of recording The Exquisite Death… in June 2005, Matthew Doty (guitar, keyboards) was still working with line-up changes, keeping Stephen Roessner (drums, percussion) and Matthew Stone (guitar) as the only full-time members of the live group. It was not until the band’s spring 2006 Japan tour that William Stichter (bass) and Oliver Chapoy (guitar, keyboards) came on board full time. The sound of this new, five-member group was what Saxon Shore wanted to capture with a new album.

When rehearsals and demo sessions started, the group had maintained a consistent line-up for nearly four years. While Doty continued to handle the primary aspects of the writing, he opened more space in the framework for creative input. Oliver Chapoy, who previously handled programming in the band, shifted to guitar. Stichter anchored many of the melodies heard in tracks like “Tweleven” and “This Place.” Roessner utilized his classical music training to perform timpani, vibes and celeste for various songs on the album. And Stone further developed his signature guitar tone with unique amplification techniques and pedals. The album also added two ideas Doty had wanted to experiment with for years - vocals, courtesy of Caroline Lufkin on “This Place.” and a string arrangement by Roessner and Chapoy on “Small Steps.”

EmptySet - EmptySet

EmptySet is a Bristol-based production duo exploring techno music’s broad influences and compiling them to a studio template focused on tight production and detailed sound design. Inspired by the city’s culture of bass lead production as well as the global renaissance of electronic music, the sound has been described as “techno meets dubstep folded back onto techno again”, a description which is perhaps the most insightful to date. The project owes credit to the classic releases of M-Plant, Sähkö and Chain Reaction as well as more recent producers such as Luciano, Burial and False. EmptySet acts as a research project connecting the ideas of a modern dancefloor with experimental approaches to music and its design.

Year of No Light & Machu Picchu Mother Future - Split

Year of No Light
Yet one more band started after too many Belgian beers under the sun of the ending summer of 2001, Year of No Light slightly but undoubtly started to slide down to gloomier atmospheres as the inherent chaos of Bordeaux’s caves and harshness of winter made their common work.

As the line-up solidified around the 5 actual members escaped from acts such as Metronome Charisma, Deja Mort and Nexus Sun, the band clarified their intentions and started to build the basis of what would be their first demo recorded in 2004. More and more shows were played with bands such as Isis, Cult of Luna, High on Fire or Unsane.

The rather general critical acclaim of the demo quoting them as being “The Cure playing sludge” combined with live reviews becoming more and more encouraging compelled the band into the writing of new tracks that finally ended up being recorded at Playrec studio under the direction of Serge Morratel in the fall of 2005. The debut “Nord” has been released in 2006.

Machu Picchu Mother Future
While on an east coast tour in November of 2007, Conifer (Important Records) and Lesbian (Holy Mountain) drove to Richmond, Virginia arriving at 5a.m. and ended up crashing at the Sound Of Music recording studio for two nights. There to play a show with Souvenir’s Young America (Crucial Blast) at the Nara Sushi, all three bands (11 members total in one live room) entered the studio on very little sleep and recorded roughly two hours of improvised music… very loosely structured and minds somewhat altered… These sessions birthed what will be known as “Space Mountain Forever.”

Comus - First Utterance

Taking their name from a character in a John Milton poem, Comus was a short-lived yet powerful folk-rock band that seems to have made an attempt to mix elements of progressive rock with the influences of Pentangle, Fairport Convention and other more traditional folk outfits. Their debut, First Utterance (1971), was followed by To Keep From Crying in 1974, moving into even more experimental sounds. Original copies of the first album still command remarkable prices, despite recent reissues by BGO in the U.K. and Si-Wan in Asia.

Their “Complete Collection” has also now been issued on CD, which is well worth a listen , not least for “Children of the Universe”.

Blackfilm - Blackfilm

The term cinematic gets tossed around a great deal in the music reviewing business, especially when it comes to those genres and styles of an electronic inclination. For the most part anything appearing particularly dark, atmospheric and epic seems to get pasted with this descriptor, and much of that undeservedly so. Perhaps the right adjective at the time, in comparison to Blackfilm’s self-titled debut album, most other so-called cinematic peers fall short. This stuff simply defines cinematic.

Arms and Sleepers - Black Paris 86

Arms and Sleepers began one night in the back of an ambulance in Cambridge. In an alleyway a man was bleeding with a cassette player in hand, the play button still on. What sounded like recordings of a gospel choir blared from the tin speaker, while down the street a jazz band could be heard.

The man was dying. He dropped the cassette player on the cement and closed his eyes, the sound carrying through the air into his ears for one last time. Though this moment in time died with him, his cassette lived on — and Arms and Sleepers were born.

Persistent international touring and constant dissemination of their sounds makes Arms and Sleepers a worthy opponent for the typical temporal constraints that can befall a band. Having issued a series of limited edition releases and the well-received Bliss Was it in That Dawn to be Alive EP (Fake Chapter) in 2007, Black Paris 86 is their debut full-length on Expect Candy Records (DE).

A tight and intense record, listening to it feels like sitting in a cinema, watching landscapes, beauty and tragedy - feeling warm and safe while a hint of mystery seems to whisper that not everything is ok out there.

Couldron - Four Winds

Back in the early days of this column, Couldron were one of the first bands to sign up for a review, and (fortunately for me as a writer, fan, and friend) the group continues to make interesting, compelling metal that can withstand even the harshest of critcisms. If I had one single complaint with 2004's Couldron EP, it was that the band was young and trying to carve their own niche in the crowded sludge metal scene. Some could even say calling Couldron similar to bands like ISIS, Neurosis, Godflesh, et al. is not unlike the pot calling the kettle black so to speak; Couldron played their music well, but they still needed some growth away from their influences to find their own sound.

Maybe it's the lineup changes (new bassist Tariq joined early last year), but to these set of rather jaded ears Four Winds sees Couldron emerging from the darker recesses of sludge with a distinct identity full of exciting possibilities. Like I said earlier, the original Couldron EP was an excellent work of atmospheric sludge, well-crafted yet lacking in a sense of massive innovation perhaps. Four Winds rectifies this minor shortcoming, the band still being as in control of their spaced out meanderings as before, but new undertones of filthy rock 'n roll, thrash, and even harsh industrial noise popping up. It almost seems as if the band has developed a sense of advanced psychic understanding, as the entire disc has a psychotic sense of telepathy to it; for every surprise here, every intriguing nuance, Couldron make you believe they've had it planned from the get-go. It is this sense of drive that propels the EP forward, and makes it that much more devastating than its predecessor.

Ready, Set, Go!

Hey folks!

Long time no see here - I know. December was full of trouble and as only two people are running this blog till now we just didn't find the time to post more updates. Now the holiday season is gone, hooray, and we just started into 2010 we just felt in the mood to relaunch the blog and terrorize you again with a lot of ugly and boring music.

Two things will change for now. There will no longer be files uploaded to Megaupload and especially Rapidshare. I know some blokes here leeched their files from Rapidshare, but it took me more the four hours on monday to get one single rar file via Rapidshare. And this is pissing me off as I prefer free hosters with no limit and waiting time like Mediafire. Don't worry, there will be mirrors to the files in the future, but we will be using RGHost.ru and iFolder.ru next to good old Mediafire.

I recommend you to use RGHost.ru from now on. No waiting time, no ads and you get good speeds, mostly over 300kb/sec. For iFolder I'm going to put up a tutorial how to leech from there as it is only using russian. Good thing on both filehosters is that the files stay up like forever without getting used. So there will be lesse dead links.

Second thing that is going to change ist the team. A mate of mine, q_uiz just offered us some help, and every kind of help is welcome. So he will set you up with some nice stuff form his media liberary. And believe me, his gusto in music is not bad.

Last thing on the list is this one. We're looking for one or maybe two folks who would like to support our blog and upload stuff. If anyone here feels the need to help just drop as a line in the shoutbox or via mail.

Cheers, a happy new year to you all and now let's get back to business!
