Nucleus Torn - Knell

Is it probably their most enigmatic album? An answer is not important n here but the word “enigmatic” stuck into my mind by the first time I heard this for a strange and unknown reason. Probably due to the fact that every time I hear the album I discover something new. Probably due to the fact that it is obviously enigmatic to me how they have managed to bring the musical harmony between their sad, deep and emotional acoustic melodies and themes combining them with those electric breakings that are coming almost from nowhere like a storm…

And even in those breakings the music still sounds so natural and smooth but at the same time it hides an unknown wild force. From storm back to calm as the acoustic musical rivers will carry the listener far away, until the next storm. Strange the game that they play but I would be a part of it anytime.

This is the second release by this Swiss musical act. If you are aware of their 2006 debut “Nihil” you could probably form a general idea of what is to follow in here but even in that case you would find extremely difficult to form your feelings in words if you want to describe what you are hearing, yes the same is happening to me now. The fact is that there are negative feelings buried under their classical music oriented acoustic parts, feelings of sadness, sorrow and melancholy. But the question comes straight ahead: “Can we point those fallings as negative?” It depends… but this is another topic out of here… And yes there is a mysterious strength on their electric breakings thanks to the slow riffing and the esoteric electric guitar themes, bringing in my mind the most clever guitar moments of the Scandinavian post Black Metal scene. And the vocals male or female… they are putting their own trademark into the final musical piece of art…

A strange kind of whispering, esoteric and dark musical beauty: this is what it is all about. I have placed the album on my CD player at about 7 o clock in the afternoon and it is five o clock in the morning now that I am writing those lines… and its music still fills the air, it is obvious it has managed to overtake me… And you know something? This happens not quite often…

(from here)
Those who like dark music will love this album. It is covered with beautiful and depressing acoustic melodies and some outbursts you will definitely love. Enjoy it!

Menace Ruine - Union of Irreconcilables

Menace Ruine came together in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in autumn 2006, when they began composing the songs that would form their debut recording, In Vulva Infernum.

While the debut album Cult Of Ruins, took its starting point in fast and , the follow-up, The Die is Cast stays true to the metal sound. The tempo has been slowed down, and could be described as heavy down-tempo with martial rhythms.

Jarboe & Justin Broadrick - J2

J2 is the result of Justin Broadrick and Jarboe being stripped and filtered out into their purest forms; an exhibition of their respective artistic perceptions, and a demonstration of the musical connection between them. With both musicians sharing a strong affiliation with self-expression, as well as boasting a colossal impact on the industrial genre with Godflesh and Swans, it’s surprising that they haven’t put their reclusive heads together up until now.

Considering the direction these artists have taken with other projects, first track “Decay” is fairly unexpected. Jarboe’s disconcerting falsetto loop opens the piece, and is gradually swallowed up by Broadrick’s rising tide of dissonance over the course of seven minutes. As with the other compositions on J2, it’s not until the third or fourth listen that you begin to “get” the appeal here. And although you may not be able to instantly empathize with what’s being created, it’s a joy to know that, in amongst the recent infatuation with the melodic, neither of these musicians are afraid to exorcise the industrial menaces of their past. Judging by the end result here, it was certainly a good move to do so.

Yet aside from this brief exploration into common ground, the remaining tracks on J2 give the strong impression that Jarboe and Broadrick need their own creative space in order to produce anything of worth. This is something particularly noticeable in the production; a majority of the time, the dry, overpowering vocals hover awkwardly over the music as opposed to striking up a connection. It’s the sound of a very tentative embrace of two introverts, each unwilling to conform their sonic persona enough to collaborate properly, and it ends up being J2’s major downfall.

That’s not to say that a fair amount of enjoyment can’t be drawn out of this release. Jarboe delivers her highlight performance on “Magick Girl”; a two-note repeated lyric drenched in desperate melancholy, crying out above a crushing dose of tension-through-monotony, with a synth bassline and programmed beat pushing the piece forward. The effect of vocal simplicity like this is astounding – why she feels the need to resort to the painfully forced vibrato tacked on to tracks such as the closing "8mmsweetbitter” is completely beyond me.

All in all, J2 certainly isn’t the glorious record it could have been. Although it’s fascinating to see the fragility of these experimental pioneers thrust into the spotlight (particularly because it gives way to some of Broadrick’s most immersive melodies to date), it feels as though Jarboe and Justin are slightly uncomfortable forcing their creative minds into one. Perhaps not the collaboration people will be hoping for, but it’s an album that offers up enough to hold your intrigue for a few listens at least, as well as keeping the reputation of both artists just about intact.

Sun City Girls - Dante's Disney Land Inferno

The Sun City Girls were an American experimental rock band, formed in 1979 in Phoenix, Arizona. From 1981 the group consisted of Alan Bishop (bass guitar, vocals), his brother Richard Bishop (guitar, piano, vocals), and the late Charles Gocher (drums, vocals). Their name was inspired by Sun City, Arizona, an Arizona retirement community. Charles Gocher died after a long battle with cancer on February 19, 2007, bringing an end to the group.

They found little mainstream success, but they continue to inspire a devoted following and have recorded numerous critically acclaimed albums, released in small editions by labels like Placebo, Majora, Eclipse Records, Amarillo Records, and their own Abduction Records. Their music was hugely varied, spreading across genres such as spoken word, free improvisation, jazz and rock. Their records typically incorporated lyrics that rely heavily on their interests in mysticism, paranormal topics (especially UFOs), religious cults and other esoterica, often also manifested in their song titles, lyrics and album art. Performances by the group were often wildly unpredictable, sometimes verging on performance art, with elaborate costumes, kabuki-inspired makeup, and the creation of a festive, ritualistic atmosphere with audience participation.

Critic Steve Leggett writes, "Throughout its history SCG has remained a challenging, unpredictable, and eclectic musical unit, operating outside the commercially driven aspirations of the mainstream recording industry, and the group has become somewhat of a beacon to independent musicians and artists everywhere." Writing in the Village Voice, Ted Hendrickson argues, "They've never made any sense, conventionally speaking, and that's what makes them fun."

The Sun City Girls should ring a bell in your ears. The Bishop brother's going on a roadtrip here, mixing avantgarde with experimental, psych with freak folk. It's like a melting pot of diverse styles but onto two discs. If you don't have it or don't know them yet, get it.

Atomsmasher - Atomsmasher

Atomsmasher: DJ Speedranch (vocals); James Plotkin (guitar, bass); David Witte (drums).

Personnel: James Plotkin (guitar, guitar synthesizer).

Arranger: James Plotkin.

Blurring the lines between grindcore, experimental noise, and in-your-face electronica, James Plotkin's Atomsmasher's debut comes off like a cross between Atari Teenage Riot, Merzbow, Aphex Twin, Fantômas, and Torture Garden-era Naked City. In other words, it's wild, it's noisy, it's jarring, and it will leave most listeners either very happy or very annoyed. Vocalist DJ Speedranch proves himself to be an obnoxious screamer par excellence on the level of Mr. Bungle's Mike Patton or the Boredoms' Yamatsuka Eye, although, in truth, his voice is often digitally processed and distorted beyond the point of recognition. The same goes for Dave Witte's drumming; his effects-treated percussion frequently sounds more like the work of an abused drum machine. Together with James Plotkin's kaleidoscopic guitar-synth playing (he also plays bass), it can be hard to tell who is doing what -- the array of digital skipping noises, crunchy static sounds, distortion blasts, and other miscellaneous debris is not what you'd typically expect from a guitar/bass/drum/vocals lineup. It isn't all noise and aggression, though, as there are several moments of spacy, guitar-generated ambience scattered amidst the chaos. There is also a welcome sense of humor present: listen to how they juxtapose a goofy children's song with an especially grating Speedranch yelp at the end of "Placebo". Folks who require riffs or clearly spelled-out song structures will feel lost here, but this disc should deliver the goods for anyone excited by James Plotkin's Atomsmasher's on-paper "supergroup" potential. ~ William York

This one is a modern classic for me. Not only because of mastermind James Plotkin was out to play on this one, it's just the whole style of the album mixing the most different styles together that could be found out there. Grindcore like guitars mixing with screams, jazz elements an drone parts. It's a Plotkin release, so it's sick stuff. Just sit down and relax when you play this one on your stereo. You will love it, I'm sure.

Kayo Dot - Coyote

Kayo Dot is an avant-garde group originally from Boston, Massachusetts, United States (now based in Brooklyn, New York) that was formed in 2003 by Toby Driver after the disband of maudlin of the Well. They released their debut album Choirs of the Eye on John Zorn’s Tzadik label that year.

Members: Toby Driver, Mia Matsumiya, David bodie, Dan Means & Terran Olson.

The music of Kayo Dot can not be accurately described by the limiting contemporary genre nomenclatures. Their songs involve complex instrumentation (composed by singer and frontman Driver), generally without refrain. They are substantially longer than typical rock songs, often ranging from 8 to 15 minutes in length.

Kayo Dot’s second album Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue was released in January of 2006.

On May 6 2008, they released their third full-length, Blue Lambency Downward, on Hydra Head Records.

Their new album, recorded in June 2009, named ‘Coyote’, is set to be released on 20 April 2010 on Hydra Head Records.

Scott Walker - The Drift

Scott Walker (Noel Scott Engel) is an American singer who has lived and worked in England since 1965. Originally discovered by Eddie Fisher and cast as a late-50s teen idol under his real name, he formed The Walker Brothers in the early ’60s and performed Phil Spector-influenced ballads. In 1967 the band broke up and Scott (taking the band’s name for his own) began a solo career. His heavily orchestrated versions of songs by Jacques Brel and others, delivered in a crooning style, became immensely popular in Britain and continental Europe. Since the 1970s his output has been sporadic, first touching on country and MOR sounds, then briefly rejoining The Walker Brothers, before heading off into experimental music, yet continuing critical respect to the present day.

His albums “Tilt” and “the Drift”, differ a lot from his earlier work.
His current artistic direction is extremely avant-garde and has been described as the “sound of nightmares”.

Try playing “Paper Doll,” from Looking Back, and “The Escape” from The Drift, with headphones and liner notes. Then decide how different they are.

His musical evolution is examined in the acclaimed documentary film “Scott Walker - 30 Century Man” in which Scott gives a very candid interview about his creative process and allows access into the meat-punching and box-bashing recording sessions for 2006’s “The Drift.”

(Taken from Last.fm)

I discovered the music of Scott Walker through a good friend of mine. He came around one day and dropped "The Drift". After two, three times of listenning to it this record just exploded in my head. It's a mixture of avantgarde singer-songwriter parts and freak folk. Could be the soundtrack to a real nightmare when you just drunk to much and feel like you want to die. Enjoy this one.

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble - Here be Dragons

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble (TKDE) formed in 2000 as a project to compose new music for existing silent movies. Jason Köhnen and Gideon Kiers, both graduates of the Utrecht School of Arts, combined their audio and visual skills to reinterpret classic movies by F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu) and F. Langs (Metropolis).
In 2004 UK trombonist Hilary Jeffery and Swiss cellist Nina Hitz joined TKDE to record the self-titled debut album which was released on Planet Mu Records in May 2006. The ensuing tour saw Eelco Bosman and Paris based vocalist Charlotte Cegarra join, forming the Ensemble into a sextet. London based violinist Sadie Anderson joined in 2008 to supply the group with extra power on stage.
The Netherlands has been TKDE’s homebase since 2007, while members have moved closer to each other to make composing and producing easier.

Apart from the mothership which is TKDE, there is another entity; The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation is a live improv jazz/drone/doom sideproject consisting of TKDE members and a host of interchanging guest musicians.

Due to the vast possibilities within the band, the sound spectrum of TKDE is hard to capture within one specific composition. Moreover, the project will lean towards various styles depending on the respective members working together at a given time. A good mix between atmosphere and technique is always the strong basis for a TKDE composition.

Live TKDE fuse analog and digital as much as possible.

Zu - Carboniferous

Zu’s is a rather admirable brand of avant-garde populism. Throw almost any left-field tag at them and it works: free improv, no-wave, punk, alternative metal, math rock, noise rock, avant-prog—Zu is the grime that builds up in the drain when all these genres are slaughtered in the same warehouse. But their populism lies not only in their embrace of styles but the fact that they constantly violate what is considered by many bands to be the sanctity of membership. Numerous groups go through lineup changes but few like this: Zu has always been Italian trio Jacopo Battaglia (drums), Massimo Pupillo (bass), and Luca T. Mai (baritone/alto sax), but they play with a revolving-door series of collaborators—everyone from Mats Gustafsson to Nobukazu Takemura—who often become the distinguishing factors between their numerous records. Still, Zu’s sound is unmistakable, perhaps because in the same way they collaborate as if they were one person, they play as if all their instruments emanated from a single source.

Tenhi - Hallavedet

Tenhi is a Finnish band formed in 1996, playing melancholic, neofolk music. The word tenhi is an old Finnish word meaning a village elder, wise old man or seer. The music of Tenhi is minimalistic and dark. Usually, the rhythm instrument lines follow the customs of modern rock music. The melodical instruments and vocals are however very heavily folk-influenced. The basic instrumentation of the band consists of acoustic guitar, bass and drums. Frequent additional instruments include piano, violin, viola and flute and less frequent didgeridoo, mouth harp, harmonium, cello, udu and synthesizer.

It is the brainchild of Tim Macuga, black metal experimentalist in Nahvalr and songwriter for the classic Western Massachusetts hardcore band The Danger Strangers, and Dan Barrett, singer of the ghost music project Giles Corey and the now-defunct In Pieces. HANL released their first full-length record in January of 2008, a double-album entitled Deathconsciousness. The two discs (entitled The Plow that Broke the Plains and The Future, respectively) feature music spanning over five years of collaboration between the two artists, and are accompanied by a 75-page booklet on medieval Italian heretics in lieu of liner notes. The album was entirely self-released, right down to the hand-painted discs, and put out via the Enemies List Home Recordings label.
