Decrepit Birth - Polarity

Decrepit Birth is a band formed in 2001 by Matt Sotelo - guitars, Bill Robinson - vocals, and Derek Boyer – bass. Originally the intention was to play devastating, brutal, technical death metal, mixed with influences from the early 1990’s Florida death metal scene. Since Matt and Derek had at one time both played in Southern California band, Deprecated, it was easy for the two of them to begin collaborating on material for the first full length Decrepit Birth album “…And Time Begins”.

In Fall of 2002, with the help of friend Tim Yeung on session drums, they entered Legion Studios to begin recording. Almost a year later “…And Time Begins” was released on Unique Leader Records, artwork by Dan Seagrave. The album had production issues but still managed to forge a very solid fan base in the death metal scene. The band went through a dry period of playing no shows due to the lack of a drummer. Bassist Derek Boyer got the chance of a lifetime and was offered a full time position with death metal legends Suffocation. That left Decrepit Birth with out a drummer or bassist.

During 2004, bassist Risha Eryavec stepped in and not long after that, drummer KC Howard of Odius Mortem officially joined the band as well. For the next couple years the new lineup played many shows, fests and one North American tour. In 2007 the band took a break and began writing full time for the new album.

Ikuinen Kaamos - Fall Of Icons

Ikuinen Kaamos are a metal band from Joensuu, Finland. Formed in 1997, they released four demos in the years 1997 - 2004 which are mainly directed to the underground black metal scene. The bands current style begins to take shape in the later demos as Ikuinen Kaamos start to soak up influences from death, doom and progressive metal.

In 2005, Ikuinen Kaamos signed a record deal with the Dutch label Descent Productions and as a result, release their debut album “The Forlorn” in 2006. It is an ambitious release that captures the passion and creativity of Ikuinen Kaamos. The lyrical concept is based upon the story of an old man who murdered his wife and child decades ago, and who now struggles with faith and guilt. Spiraling riffs and progressive rhythms alternating from high-speed passages to acoustic interludes merge with a sepulchral voice to drown the listener deeper and deeper into a timeless emotional abyss. “The Forlorn” is a unique album that captivates from the beginning to the end.

In 2007, Ikuinen Kaamos record their sophomore album which is due to be released in January 2008. After repeated delays in releasing the album, their old label informs the band of their eventual inability to release it due to financial issues. Fed up and tired of letting their impatient fans wait for new musical outputs, the band decides to release three songs from the album as a free downloadable EP entitled “Closure”. It incorporates more progressive elements while maintaining the utterly melancholic atmosphere for which Ikuinen Kaamos are known for. The EP introduces clean vocals which support a wider range of extreme vocals in their lament.

Brutal Truth - Evolution through Revolution

After 12-years of relative inactivity, at least in terms of releasing albums, our favourite headfuck grinders Brutal Truth are finally ready to unleash their eagerly awaited fourth full length, the utterly insane “Evolution through Revolution”. After being lucky enough to have witnessed a few of these songs at last years return live performances, hopes were high (excuse the pun) for the release of this album, but after so many years could the band hold up just as well on record as they did on stage? Fucking damn right they can.

It takes less than a second for you to feel the full brunt of Brutal Truth’s arsenal as “Sugardaddy” quite literally explodes through the speakers, unleashing those unmistakable disjointed blasts and monstrous grooves, insane guitar/bass acrobatics and Kevin Sharpe’s primordial roars like they have never been away. Referring back to 1994’s “Need to Control” in terms of the mammoth production job and song structuring, tracks like “On the Hunt”, “Attack Dog” and the ball-breaking title track hack away at the limbs relentlessly, while more experimental moments on tracks “Detached” and “Semi-Automatic Carnation” give the album the extra depth and charge needed for the faster, more typically Brutal Truth tracks to explode with increasingly violent force. Of course, you can hear the jazzy/spazzy vibes of “Sounds of the Animal Kingdom” creeping through in many of the guitar riffs and vocal phrasings, but whereas “Sounds…” came across a bit too flat in the production stakes, this album more than makes up for with its thunderous, almost inhuman/superhuman delivery. With the many reformations from metal bands in recent years it is refreshing to hear one that has actually come back in better form than ever, actually living up to the inevitable hype by putting a lifetime of dedication and passion into every single note, beat and vocal line.

Re-inventing the grindcore wheel to keep turning and crushing in ways you probably thought impossible, “Evolution through Revolution” once again sets Brutal Truth quite literally thousands of miles above their contemporaries. What with this, the new album from Agoraphobic Nosebleed and the amazing new album from Napalm Death, it becomes clear that the future of our beloved grindcore scene looks very fucking good indeed.

Hanging Garden - Teotwawki

In summer 2004 Matti and Ari decide to start a band playing slow doomy metal. The idea is to combine qualities of their existing bands, Matti’s dark rock act Shamrain and Ari’s thrashing death metal band Dauntless into something special. Their mutual friend Janne is asked to play drums.

During the following winter, the first tunes are written for the band, but the real start doesn’t take place until spring 2005. At that time Matti and Janne put their former band, Grayscale into rest and finally have the time the band needs to get things going. Shamrain guitarist Mikko is recruited to play guitar and the first rehearsals take place.

The recordings of the first promo-CD start during the autumn and winter and a secong guitarist, Saku, is recruited to boost the sound. The band is named ‘Hanging Garden’ and the first form of the promo-CD finally sees the light of day just in time for the Finnish Metal Expo in February 2006. Some 2-song promos are given away to labels and medias, and the ‘official’ 3-song version is finished two months later. Only a couple of weeks later Hanging Garden inks a deal with Spikefarm Records.

In April 2007 the band released their debut album, “Inherit the Eden”, through Spinefarm Records. The album contains 8 tracks of doom-death metal.
