Wooden Shjips - Vol. 2

Wooden Shjips (sic) is a vital and refreshingly inspired quartet from San Francisco playing loud rock ‘n’ roll in a style heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism and garage rock excess. Started as an experiment in rhythmic primitivism and group improvisation, the current lineup brings a more structured rock approach to its performances, utilizing a traditional lineup of drums (Omar Ahsanuddin), bass (Dusty Jermier), organ (Nash Whalen), guitar (Erik “Ripley” Johnson) and vocals.

Its songs sound something akin to the icy garage rock of early Echo & The Bunnymen crossed with the sun-bleached tremolo-punk of The Scientists. There are hints of krautrock, the trance-inducing organ haze of Suicide, Deerhunter style dance-drone, classic desert-fried garage psych and the mysterious, obscure Japanese lysergic-rock band Les Rallizes Denudes all mixed into one explosive whole on Wooden Shjips self-titled Holy Mountain debut.

The experience of Wooden Shjips has been equated to that of the Japanese phenomenon called maboroshi, which is somewhat similar to seeing a mirage or hallucinating in time. In the context of imagination/dreams, maboroshi is attributed to past occurrences and can take on a meaning like “phantoms.” The group’s songs seem to exist in a dream state in which anything is possible.

Wooden Shjips released two acclaimed records in 2006, beginning early in the year with the self-released 10” EP Shrinking Moon for You.

Motorpsycho - Heavy Metal Fruit

Motorpsycho is a band from Trondheim in Norway, formed in 1989. Their music can generally be defined as psychedelic rock, but they also mix in elements from metal, jazz, rock, noise, pop and many other musical styles. The members of the band are Bent Sæther (bass/vocals) and Hans Magnus “Snah” Ryan (guitar/vocals). Håkon Gebhardt (drums) left the band in March 2005 to concentrate on solo projects (as Gebhardt) and his other band HGH.
Kenneth Kapstad, drummer, joined Motorpsycho as a full member late in 2007.

Farflung - A wound in Eternity

Supersonic Space Rock in its own field. This band wears its influences well, but also creates its own cosmos within the genre to somewhat create a sub genre whatever that would be called. Faflung has now become Americas legendary cult Space Rock band with 6 LPs under the belt, and stellar voyages near and afar. The new LP, a Wound in Eternity is their latest greatest offering, and is available on MeteorCity Records. It is indeed the heaviest and most far out venture to date.

The Devil's Blood - The Time Of No Time Evermore

Crawling out of the scattered ashes and smoking remnants of his former bands, S.L. decided it was time to finally start writing his own songs. He started to write as his whole life seemed to burn up besides him, as if his life and sanity depended on it. In the flames, however, he found a new and surprisingly comfortable niche. No longer content with being second man in anyone else’s band or project he wanted to channel the power of darkness and choas directly through himself and into his fellow musicians. This tight coven of friends, satanists, heretics and iconoclasts was formed in late 2007 and…

13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sound of the 13th Floor Elevators

Hailing from Austin, Texas, the members of 13th Floor Elevators were quite possibly the first artists to describe their music as psychedelic. Their lyrics and sleeve notes openly and religiously endorsed the use of drugs (particularly LSD) to alter human consciousness for the better.

The band rattled to the middle of the Hot 100 in 1966 with You’re Gonna Miss Me, anchored by Roky Erickson’s unforgettable yelping vocals, Stacy Sutherland’s guitar, and Tommy Hall’s jug runs. According to myth, Tommy’s jug was tuned by the amount of marijuana stored in it.

The group pioneered some of the first garage psychedelia on its albums The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators 1966, and the followup Easter Everywhere 1967.

However, Texas at that time was an extremely conservative area that still hadn’t come to terms with 50’s rock ‘n’ roll. The authorities and the police set out to bust the entire band for pot (and—not surprisingly—succeeded).

Stacy Sutherland was jailed. To avoid a prison term, Roky pleaded insanity—a misguided ploy that landed him in Rusk State Hospital for the criminally insane for 3 years. That turn of events spelled the end of the band, although there was a posthumous 1969 LP, Bull of the Woods.

Roky Erickson & the Aliens - The Evil One

Roky Erickson (born Roger Kynard Erickson on July 15, 1947) is an American singer, songwriter, harmonica player and guitarist from Austin, Texas. He was a founding member of the 13th Floor Elevators, who are considered to be the first band to ever use the word “” to describe rock music.

In 1969 the band were all arrested for possession of marijuana and Roky was incarcerated in Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane where he reportedly underwent electroshock therapy and was placed on Thorazine amongst other controversial treatments. Many claim he has never been the same since. Sadly in the intervening years record execs and managers displayed the bad side of the music business and took full advantage of his condition often leaving him living in poverty while they hoarded all the cash.

In 2001 Roky’s youngest brother, Sumner Erickson (ex-tuba player for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra), was appointed his legal guardian and an improvement in Roky’s faculties has been reported since, leading to a return to live shows.

An excellent documentary on Roky, “You’re gonna miss me” (2005), chronicled his troubled life - his schizophrenia, incarceration for possession of a joint, and talented and eccentric family.

Coven - Witchcraft Destroys Minds And Reaps Souls

The best-known band named Coven is a psychedelic rock band, composed of vocalist Jinx Dawson, bassist Oz Osborne (not to be confused with Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath) and drummer Steve Ross. They had a top 10 hit on Warner Brothers Records with a cover of Original Caste’s “One Tin Soldier”, which was used as the theme song to the 1971 movie Billy Jack.

Jinx Dawson , Ross, and Osborne formed Coven in Chicago in the late 1960s. They were signed to Mercury Records, where they put out their first album, Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls in 1969. The music on the album was, for the most part, standard pop psychedelia; what made it distinctive was the heavy emphasis on diabolical subject matter, including songs such as “The White Witch of Rose Hall”, “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge”, and “Dignitaries of Hell”. The album concluded with a 13 minute track of chanting and Satanic prayers called “Satanic Mass”.

Unwanted publicity came to the band in the form of a sensational Esquire magazine article entitled “Evil Lurks in California,” which linked counterculture interest in the occult to Charles Manson and the Tate-La Bianca murders. As a result, Mercury withdrew the album from circulation.
