Sunn O))) - The Grimmrobe Demos

The Grimmrobe Demos is Sunn O)))'s first recorded album, and is the most direct representation of their self-proclaimed Earth-worship. It was originally limited to 500 copies by Hydra Head Records, but in 2005 Southern Lord Records reissued it on CD and vinyl with a bonus live track, An early rehearsal track titled "Bremerton" was included on the vinyl release.

The album's third track was named after frontman Dylan Carlson of Earth, the band that inspired this album, and the genesis of the band.

The booklet of the second version of the album contains a long passage of apocalyptic writing by Seldon Hunt, written in Melbourne, during October 2004.

On August 8, 2008, Sunn O))) announced that they would do a mini-tour consisting of four concerts to commemorate the 10th anniversary for this album's release

Some months ago I googled about one of my favorite Earth songs "Omens and Portents I: The Driver" and found, that this song was used for the soundtrack of this movie. I found, that this movie is directed by Jim Jarmusch, I loved all of his movies and just had to see this movie with such an awesome soundtrack, featuring bands like Sunn O))), Boris and Earth. If you get the chance to see this movie, watch it!!!

Sunn O))) - Discography

Sunn O))) is an American drone/doom/experimental band based in New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA and formed in 1998. The band’s core members consists of Stephen O’Malley (Khanate, Burning Witch, SARIN, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, Lotus Eaters, Ginnungagap, Thorr’s Hammer, Fungal Hex, KTL, Æthenor, Gravetemple) and Greg Anderson (Goatsnake, Thorr’s Hammer, Burning Witch, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, Brotherhood, Engine Kid, FALSE LIBERTY, Burial Chamber Trio, Ascend). The band was formed as a tribute of sorts to Earth, another very heavy band noted as the pioneers of drone metal. G. Stuart Dahlquist currently of Asva and ex-Burning Witch performed bass on The Grimmrobe Demos and ØØ Void.

The band is named after the Sunn amplifier brand, whose logo includes a circle next to the “SUNN” banner with waves heading off to the right - reading those out as letters makes “Sunn O)))”. The band uses the same logo for their albums as well.

Their sound is extremely slow and heavy, using droning guitars accompanied by feedback and other sound effects to create their soundscapes. There is very little drumming and a lack of any discernible beat, though their collaboration album with Boris features drumming from Boris drummer, Atsuo.

Khlyst - Chaos is my Name

I'd be surprised if a more disturbing piece of music came out this year. Between the phantom guitar screeches of James Plotkin (Khanate), the somber ambient womb rumblings and the maniacally insane vocal desecration of Runhild Gammelsaeter (Thor's Hammer) the I find myself in a nightmare with no end, just different levels of terror.

The album starts off with hellish oral screams underpinned by a throbbing and extremely chaotic guitar. Both give the impression of unfettered animosity but in very different ways. This mental abyss gives way to calm yet equally smothering ambient minimalism. Just as you are feeling comfortable yet somewhat uneasy the thunderously discordant guitar and earsplitting shrieking madness rears its insane head once again. The back and forth interplay of these two themes continues throughout the album and really give me the impression of one long continuous musical odyssey rather than the 8 tracks (named I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, and VII) that comprise the appropriately named Chaos is My Name.

This is for fans of extreme art only. The best way I can describe Khlyst is if you can picture the witches from Aghast smashing in John Zorn's (Painkiller/Naked City) face with a guitar! And even this imagery really doesn't do the music justice. Khlyst's Chaos is My Name might not be a journey everyone should take but those who are brave enough venture into this realm will certainly find very little comfort or sleep that night I can assure you. Artistic brilliance? Maybe. Sheer madness? Most assuredly so!

(Taken from here)

This baby was out in 2006 and now when I remember that Khanate stopped creating music I was hanging on this one last night. It's not quite that misanthrope and harsh as Khanate got on their albums but especially the growls from Runhild give you a special feeling on this one. Everyone who diggs stuff like Khanate should give Khlyst a try.

Ascend - Ample Fire Within

We don't really have any proof that the apocalypse, if such a thing is actually coming, will be cathartic. Yet, the layers of blackhole-stretched doom chords, trudging sludge, and all-enveloping drones the members of Sunn0))) have been wallowing in since Earth 2 wormed its way into Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson's noggins, suggest that it will be. No doubt, any of the pair's records or collaborations––including this one, which finds Anderson in the company of longtime friend, Gentry Densley (Iceburn, Eagle Twin)––would be perfect background music for a porch visit from a duo of well-meaning Jehovah's witnesses, spouting passages from Revelation. The music here, then, is the soundtrack not for the destruction itself, but the release that follows. In this way, Ascend aren't barking dire warnings but reminding us that, to paraphrase an old gospel tune, there are better things for us. Hence their name.

First track, "The Obelisk of Kolob," with its title reference to the star that Mormons believe to be closest to God's living quarters, is an engulfing ocean of drones and agitated, portending riffs. This is surely the end of time itself, captured digitally. But four minutes into the assault, complete with guitars that sound like whinnying beasts, the track is shut down, as if a larger force is saying, "not yet." Current Earth keyboard and trombone player Steve Moore, who guests on this album, opens the title track with perhaps the darkest chords ever to be gotten from an electric piano. It's like early seventies Miles, with Chick Korea having been given some very bad news. In come layers of slow, constant batterings of riffs, which are finally allowed to subside like so much cooling lava. "Divine," with Densley's tormented, lugubrious vocals, suggests some of his and Anderson's fascination with early-70s jazz fusion; however, there are no flurries of notes or tricky arpeggios here. This is more like the head of Bitches Brew as played by the Melvins, fronted by Benjamin Smoke.

If the first three tracks are the destruction and chaos that is bound to follow, the next track, "V.O.G", is the long trudge up winding cobble steps into a frightening new sunlight. It also contains the album's meatiest riffage, which all but buries the solo fretwork of guests Bubba Dupree and Kim Thayil. "Her Horse is Thunder," with Moore's organ blending seamlessly into the cauldron of chords, seems like an uprising: violent, scary but ultimately positive. Which all leaves "Dark Matter" to be a final statement of purpose. The vocals at the track's beginning are incantations, which allow for the slow build of chord blocks. The calm at the piece's center is a soundtrack for restoration after a storm, the catharsis following devastation. It's tempting to rise and salute this track's triumphant riffs. No doubt, the overwhelming power of so much of the current doom/drone/what-have-you scene seems to take itself so seriously as to invite sarcasm or invoke fear. Yet, a patient listen to this disc suggests that Ascend is the sequenced soundtrack to an Abrahamic god expelling the damned in order to aggressively make way for a more decent planet. And there's nothing more sobering than that.

(From here)

Something like a modern classic for me and one of my mostly loved drone-doom (if we can call this so) records in the last two years. If you don't know them just check them out!

Earth - Discography

The most well-known Earth is an band formed in 1990 in Olympia, Washington, USA by Dylan Carlson, Slim Moon, and Greg Babior. They are pioneers in the minimalistic and repetitive form of known as drone doom. The band at some point moved to Seattle where Carlson forged a strong friendship with music icon Kurt Cobain, who sang lead vocals for the song Divine and Bright on the live album Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars. Cobain also appeared as a “specialist” on Earth’s 1990 debut release Extra-Capsular Extraction, and sang backing vocals on A Bureaucratic Desire for Revenge Part 2. Joe Preston, who played bass briefly with the Melvins, also appears on this 3 song CD.

Dylan Carlson has been the driving force of the band and still remains the core of an everchanging line-up. As of the release of their most recent album (entitled The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull), Earth consists of Dylan Carlson (guitars/amplifiers), Adrienne Davis (drums/percussion), Steve Moore (acoustic and electric pianos/wurlitzer) and Don McGreevy (acoustic/electric bass). Bill Frisell appeared as a guest guitarist on three songs.

Khanate - Clean Hands go Foul

Their songs are marked by dissonant, heavily down-tuned guitar/bass figures, extremely slow tempos, swarms of high-pitched feedback, and painfully shrieked vocals, making for a genuinely anguished and challenging listening experience — put another way, their music is not for everybody.

The quartet was headed up by guitarist Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O))), Burning Witch, SARIN, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, Lotus Eaters, Ginnungagap, Thorr’s Hammer, Fungal Hex, KTL, Æthenor, Gravetemple) and bassist James Plotkin (O.L.D., Atomsmasher/ Phantomsmasher, Khlyst, James Plotkin & Tim Wyskida, Lotus Eaters, Regurgitation, etc.), two musicians whose reputations in the underground metal/experimental arenas precede them and can give listeners an idea of what to expect from the band. Rounding out the lineup were vocalist Alan Dubin (also formerly of O.L.D. and Regurgitation) and drummer Tim Wyskida (Blind Idiot God, James Plotkin & Tim Wyskida and Manbyrd). Khanate released their self-titled debut in the fall of 2001 on Southern Lord Records, a 12”EP ‘Dead/ No Joy (remix)’ off of Load Records in 2003, their second long player, ‘Things Viral’ off of Load Records (vinyl) and Southern Lord (CD) in 2003 and the ‘Capture/ Release’ mini-album released by Hydrahead Records (US version) and Trust No One Records (Euro pic-disc) in 2005. There are also two DVDs as well as a handful of live releases self released by the band and by Archive Records (‘It’s Cold When Birds Fall From the Sky’, 2005).

As of September 24, 2006, Khanate have called it quits. Japanese re-issue CDs of the debut, ‘Things Viral’ and ‘Capture/Release’ albums are out now via Daymare Recordings. Each contain a second bonus disc with out-of-print and rare material but ‘Capture/Release’ contains the ‘Dead & Live Aktions’ DVD as its bonus. The posthumous album entitled “Clean Hands Go Foul” has been released in January 2009 on vinyl and digipack CD with bonus DVD “Capture & Release” on Hydra Head, picture LP on Trust No One and Japanese papersleeve CD version on Daymare.
