Harvestman / Minsk / US Christmas - Hawkwind Triad

With all of the amazing underground psychedelic/space rock bands to emerge in the last five years, a proper Hawkwind tribute album is about as overdue as a mainstream “indie” ban on Ivy League educated fag-pop albums. Hey, look at that, I think I just coined a new genre! Call me Simon Reynolds because I’m going to overuse the shit out of that phrase until its Wikipedia page (*snap* get on it, nerds!) credits me with its creation. A few years ago we got that awesome 7″ series with White Hills, Mugstar, Acid Mother’s Temple, Mudhoney, Kinski and Bardo Pond covering tracks for the Trensmat label, but that was a limited edition three-piece set you had to buy separately. Although I’ve never heard of these bands Harvestman and Minsk, I will gladly endure them for a slice of US Christmas. That band is up there with White Hills, Mugstar, Titan and Earthless as the creamiest of the Hawkwind torchbearers.

Fittingly, it is US Christmas that gets the new Hawkwind Triad album rolling with a stunning cover of “Master Of The Universe.” The overdriven guitar riffs are dead-on, sounding identical to those of the of space rock luminaries which inspired this project. Harvestman’s singer sounds a tad bit out of his league with his gravelly delivery. Musically it works, their take on “D Rider” sounds almost minimalist compared to Hawkwind’s original composition. Minsk definitely brings enough psychedelic effects and aggressive rhythms to impress. But it’s US Christmas that steals the show here. Listen to “Orgone Accumulator” and tell me the band couldn’t easily pull off an entire album of Hawkwind covers by themselves.

I’d say the tracks by US Christmas are the least re-imagined efforts on the album, but all three bands realize the importance of approaching a classic sound from a modern perspective. Minsk use their background as a self-described “psychedelic metal” act to add heaviness and a bit more complexity to what was considered at the time to be very progressive music. The best Harvestman contribution, “The Watcher” could just as easily be a cut on a fucked-up swamp blues compilation as it could a newly recorded Hawkwind cover. Maybe it’s related to my not being a huge Neurosis fan, but I found myself enjoying Harvestman the least of the triad. Sorry, Steve Von Till. I still adore Culper Ring!

It can be frustrating at times to describe the sounds of bands of this ilk without invoking the Hawkwind reference. Oftentimes I feel like I’m not giving bands enough credit if I say they’re reminiscent of one of the earliest space/psych bands on the planet. As an obsessive music fan and sometimes music writer I never want to sell a band short by simply comparing one group’s sound to those original trailblazers. I want to get the idea of a sound across to potential new listeners in a creative and unique way. Still, it helps to know that all of these bands are not ashamed of who most-inspired them. That Harvestman, Minsk and US Christmas (plus those Trensmat-recorded bands before them) are more than willing to pridefully record an album of Hawkwind material encapsulates the best possible course of action for bands that might draw easy comparisons: Show you adoration for those who came before you while putting forth something completely your own. My personal thanks to all three of these bands for offering up a fantastic record.

Ufomammut - Idolum

Inspired as much by the space-tinged acid rock of Kyuss and Monster Magnet as by progressive rock icons like Pink Floyd, Blue Cheer and early Black Sabbath, Tortona, Italy’s UFOmammut was formed in 1999 by Urlo (bass/vocals), Poia (guitar/keyboards), Vita (drums) and Alien (synths).

Their fourth album was released in 2008 and is called "Idolum". It was recorded in Milan at the Magnolia Studio. Lento’s Lorenzo Stecconi was the sound engineer for this album. The album has received acclaim all across the world.

Ufomammut’s live show is supported by the internationally acclaimed video and graphic art of Malleus, a rock artists’ collective who conjure the entirety of Ufommamut’s visual impact.

Did Ufomammut absolutely fuck with my mind last night? Yes, they did. They delivered one of the best audio-visual performances I ever had the honor to experience, probably second only to Ulver. Ranging from superheavy riffage with added psychedelia to post-rock-ish arrangements, this album (and every other Ufomammut release, really) is a must-have for every music enthusiast.

Torche - Meanderthal

Torche is a band from Miami, Florida, United States, they play a distinctive style of stoner/ sludge metal. The band categorizes their music as ‘’stoner pop’‘.

The group was formed in 2004 by Steve Brooks (ex-Floor), Juan Montoya (ex-Floor, ex-Cavity, ex-Ed Matus’ Struggle), Jonathan Nuñez and Rick Smith (who also played in the grindcore bands Shitstorm and Tyranny of Shaw, and the screamo band Tunes for Bears to Dance To). According to MTracks.com: “Their music has a unique, hard-hitting sound that provokes a wide range of emotions, and they have a large fan base throughout the world. ” They have toured with Mogwai, Isis, Pelican, Black Cobra, Baroness, Jesu, The Sword, Stinking Lizaveta, Harvey Milk and Boris. Steve Brooks, however, has said that they don’t consider themselves a metal band. In describing the band’s sound, Smith said in an interview: “To me it’s mostly a combination of everything we listen to collectively as a band. We take what we like from what we grew up on and use it as creatively as we can. I think the meshing of different sounds comes naturally just because we all have different musical backgrounds yet have a ton of common interests.” In terms of touring, Brooks said Torche is getting more of a young crowd.

On April 8, 2008, the band released their second full-length, entitled Meanderthal. It was produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge, Genghis Tron). It was met with critical acclaim, including that from Decibel Magazine who ranked Meanderthal #1 on their list of the Top 40 Extreme Albums of 2008 as well as an 8.2/10 by Pitchfork Media. In an interview, Brooks said the band themselves came up with the album’s concept in terms of artwork and packaging.

Melvins - The Bride Screamed Murder

Melvins are an American band formed in Montesano, Washington in 1982. In the early days of their career their dark, heavy, oppressively slow sound made them innovators of genres like sludge, grunge and doom metal. Melvins’ music is influenced by Flipper, Black Flag’s My War-era hardcore punk and Black Sabbath-style heavy metal, but their idiosyncratic approach, bizarre sense of humor, and experimentation make neat categorization difficult. Singer/guitarist Buzz Osborne (aka “King Buzzo”) and drummer Dale Crover are constant members while several bass guitarists have cycled through the group. Melvins usually performed as a trio until 2006 when two members of Big Business became permanent members of the band.

The band was named after a grocery clerk at the Thriftway in Montesano, Washington where Osborne was employed. Melvin was the most-hated fellow employee and the band felt it to be an appropriate name. Like SF noisenik predecessors Flipper, their love of slow tempos and sludgy sound were a strong influence on grunge music, especially Nirvana and many other bands from Seattle. Their protegés, however, tended to use more conventional musical structures with this sound.

After releasing their well-received Godlike Snake debut in the year 2000, Ufomammut toured sporadically and contributed odd tracks to numerous compilations and tribute albums — most notably the Blue Explosion tribute to Blue Cheer. After the recording sessions Alien (the synth player) left the band.

Recorded in 2003, their superlative sophomore effort, Snailking was released by The Music Cartel a year later it’s a seminal album, which combine the violence of Neurosis with the psychedelia of the more visionary Pink Floyd.
Lucifer Songs followed in late 2005 both on CD+DVD and LP+DVD, produced by their new label SupernaturalCat and Rocket Recordings.

“Lucifer Songs” is the result of a mature and tight-knit band, willing to experiment whilst maintaining their core sound, evolving alongside new soundscapes made up of sinister atmospheres and gloomy sounds of vintage electronics and obsessive dilatations approaching drone music. As “Lucifer Songs” has been released, many musical critics defined the band’s sound as the beginning of a whole new kind of music, which mixes doom with psychedelic, trance with extreme, industrial with post-rock.

High on Fire - Snakes for the Divine

High On Fire is a stoner metal band originally formed from the remnants of the legendary stoner band Sleep. Matt Pike, from Sleep, sings and plays guitar in High on Fire and founded the band with George Rice (bass) and Des Kensel (drums).

High on Fire’s sound is extremely heavy, drawing influences from the aforementioned Sleep, Motörhead, and even hardcore punk.

The Oakland, California band formed in 1998 and released ‘The Art of Self Defense’ on Man’s Ruin Records, in March 2000. After Man’s Ruin Records folded, the album was re-released via Tee-Pee Records on CD and vinyl with new artwork and two bonus tracks: Steel Shoe (an original) and The Ursurper (Celtic Frost).

Since this Savannah, Georgia, USA quintet first formed in early 2001, worrying about genre limitations has never been a priority. Taking musical chances, however, always has been. While KYLESA are as heavy as any band out there, they are beholden to no one scene and no preconceived notions of what heavy music should be. “Lots of people like to stick to one kind of music,” guitarist/vocalist Philip Cope elaborates, “and even with the underground, lots of people segregate themselves into small little categories and place lots of imaginary rules on these scenes.”

With their Small Stone debut “Using the Useless” this trio is leading the charge against mediocrity and watered down tepidness.

Formed from the ashes of the late, great, and woefully underappreciated Unida (which also featured John Garcia of Kyuss fame), HOUSE OF BROKEN PROMISES is a no-holds-barred double shot of classic hard rock. You can’t write riffs like the ones found on “Blister” and “Highway Grit” without them being part of your DNA. You can’t lay down grooves like those on “Walk on By” and “Obey the Snake” by accident. You have to feel ‘em in your bones. And that’s exactly what you get with HOUSE OF BROKEN PROMISES. Guitarist Arthur Seay, bassist/vocalist Eddie Plascencia, and drummer Mike Cancino are so in tune with what makes a rock song rock harder and better, it’d be scary if it wasn’t so awesome. They made their first recorded appearance on an obscure 1994 compilation entitled Take Care of Scabbard Fish, released only in Japan and now out of print. Absolutego, their full-length debut, came out in 1996 on the band’s own Fangs Anal Satan imprint but was unavailable in the U.S. for years, a situation that was remedied when the Los Angeles-based Southern Lord label reissued the album in early 2001 along with a bonus track and new packaging.

Temples - III

Weedeater - God Luck and good Speed

A 3 piece stoner/sludge/doom metal band from Wilmington, North Carolina, USA, formed in 1998. Features Dave ‘Dixie’ Collins (ex-Buzzov*en, Bongzilla, Sourvein) on bass/vocals, Shep on guitar and Keko on drums.

Weedeater have released three albums to date, in 2001 they released their debut …And Justice For Y’all and in 2002 they released the follow-up Sixteen Tons, produced by the legendary Billy Anderson.

The band has now been signed by Southern Lord Records and released their third album God Luck And Good Speed, this time produced by Steve Albini.

Sleep - Discography

After an overlooked debut, Sleep released a well-received follow-up, Sleep’s Holy Mountain, in 1992 on Earache. The record had obvious Black Sabbath influences, and has been described as ‘the best Black Sabbath never wrote.’

The success of Sleep’s Holy Mountain landed Sleep a contract with a larger record company (London), who paid up front for Sleep’s next record. As the story goes, Sleep went out and spent all the money on Orange amplifiers and marijuana (although this is denied by the band), then went on to record what is easily one of both stoner rock and doom metal’s defining moments; the 1 hour long Dopesmoker.

London refused to publish the record, and Sleep privately released a somewhat shortened version of the song (as a bootleg) in 1998 as Jerusalem before splitting up. Jerusalem was properly released in 1999, however it took until 2003 for Dopesmoker to be released in all its glory on teepee records.

Sleep’s guitarist, Matt Pike, went on to form High on Fire.

Cisneros returned to public music in 2003 with former band mate Chris Hakius as OM, a bass and drum duo. The band’s first three albums feature Cisneros on vocals and bass and Hakius on drums.

Fistula - We, the Beast

Fistula are stoner/sludge metal. They’ve had many line-up changes around the two key members Corey Bing and Bahb Branca and had disbanded shortly after the split with Burmese in 2004. Since returning in 2006 with the ‘For a Better Tomorrow’ EP, they’ve released two epic full lengths on Crucial Bliss, namely ‘Inverted Black Star’ and ‘Lessons in Lamentation’, an EP and split and another album ‘Burdened by Your Existence’, which brings us up to date.

Queen Elephantine - Kailash

Queen Elephantine is meditative blues of whirlwind ghost ships forced down the hopeless maelstroms of the Nile. Improvised, modal stoner/doom from Hong Kong.

Rooting from the guitar-bass duo of Indrayudh Shome and Daniel Quinn, the band went on through several lineup changes and a split with Massachusetts’ Elder. They finally settled on a four-piece, with the addition of drummers Michael Isley and Alex Buck, which first started to garner recognition in Hong Kong as well as recording both the acclaimed split with Sons of Otis and the massive full length “Surya”.

Shome then moved to the United States of America in late 2007, where he reassembled the band alongside vocalist Rajkishen Narayanan. Andrew Jude Riotto, bass
Brett Zweiman on tabla and Chris Dialogue on drums complete the current line-up.

Church of Misery - Live at Roadburn Festival 2008

Church Of Misery (チャーチ・オブ・ミザリ) is a japanese doom metal band with a specific extra-groovy sound that is often described as “stoner doom” but the band tends to snub this term saying “We hate trend. Electric Wizard - Dopethrone

Electric Wizard are a doom metal band from Dorset, England that formed in 1993. The band have since recorded six albums, two of which are now considered to be landmarks of their genre: Come My Fanatics… and Dopethrone. Electric Wizard have a distinct yet traditional doom metal sound that incorporates stoner and sludge traits, with lyrics typically involving the occult, witchcraft, H.P. Lovecraft, horror films and cannabis. During 2003, founding members Tim Bagshaw and Mark Greening left to form the band Ramesses, making Jus Oborn the only founding member who remains.

Once again a Roadburn set. This one is from 2005 and was recorded during the Electric Wizard set - soundboard quality, of course. You can hear that Jus must have been whorshipping the magic weed before getting up on stage. Sludgy, doomy and heavy as fuck - the Wizard live, enjoy!
